The Merrick Festival Caroling Competition
This time of year people express there love and celebration of Christmas through caroling and the Merrick Festival Caroling Competition invites many to do so. The Caroling Competition has become an eagerly awaited holiday tradition in the City of Coral Gables. It’s become a special way of celebrating the holidays, continuing the tradition of the festive sound of children, caroling in front of the holiday tree. Merrick Festival showcases the performing arts in our community, presenting free performances at public venues.
Only 15 schools participated in the first year of the Competition. Now, 30 Miami-Dade and Broward County middle and senior, public, private and parochial schools, more than 1,500 children, compete for $25,000 contributed by 550 Building tenants, local businesses and municipal organizations. The building tenants, the neighbors and the folks at City Hall really loved the event. It took on a life of its own.
In 1992 it was added to the Merrick Festival, which made it possible to apply for public grants. It is that grant money that has helped to fund the growth and development of the event that the Caroling Competition has become This is not only a competition though, but it is also a way for people to gather and sing as a community. The competition also provides a place for family and friends to come to relax and be entertained by holiday carols. The building tenants, the neighbors and the folks at City Hall really loved the event. It took on a life of its own.
