Christmas Tree Lighting Kicks Off the Holiday Season
The Merrick Park Christmas Tree Lighting has become a tradition in the Coral Gables community over the past years, but because of the date, people believe it is starting the holiday season too early. Held on November 16th, the event is days before Thanksgiving weekend, but the event is for the holidays in December.
Although the event is held slightly before Thanksgiving, people believe it is still a gathering that is iconic in the community. Valerie Uzcategui stated “It’s super fun because there’s a lot of families and everybody gets together, and it’s kind of fun because we’re getting the spirit for Christmas, and it’s nice to see everyone nice and happy.” The performances, meetings, and of course, the lighting, all combine to create an event that has become a synonymous with the identity in Coral Gables.
With winter arriving soon, many cities and states throughout the country experience cold weather, but in South Florida, the temperatures remain warm, leaving some to forget about the holiday season. Commercials, songs, and books about Christmas all centralize winter and cold weather with the holidays, but the tree lighting helps the community finally get the feeling of the coming holidays. Lourdes Guerrero said “The weather is super hot and there’s not a lot of things that remind you that it’s Christmas time I feel. So this is nice. My mom said this is like a Rockefeller Center in Miami.”
Even with the warm weather and the early date, the Merrick Park Christmas Tree Lighting still gets families to gather and kick off the holiday season.
