CCHS Open House Brings Clubs and Classes Into the Spotlight
For future high school students, the CCHS Open House is an event that brings future Explorers from around Miami to the school. The gathering allows for these prospects to evaluate classes as well as extra curricular activities, and decide whether they are interested in what Columbus has to offer. For faculty and currently enrolled Explorers, the event allows them to invite these incoming students into the school, and into the brotherhood.
At this year’s Open House, the families of the students looking to enroll are toured around the campus, and have the opportunity to observe and interact with students who are working on projects in the art room, experimenting in the Science labs, or practicing their skills on the field. One of the main attractions this year was the newly acquired VR setup for the science department. Visitors were able to try on the headset and perform experiments in a virtual lab that allows for students to do more potentially dangerous experiments safely.
In the cafeteria, clubs had set up booths that explained why their organization was worth joining. The art department displayed many of their students’ artworks, and had stations with live demonstrations of different art-making methods such as printing, painting, drawing, and digital. Here, enrolling students and their families had the chance to enjoy refreshments, enjoy art, and ask questions of faculty, alumni, and explorers.
Another focus of the event was the internship program, which gives many students an opportunity to get a foot in the door of working world. Speakers from the different possible places of employment came to the school to speak to the incoming freshman. They explained the advantages of getting work experience, and the opportunities that can arise from the program. For the academically excellent students, there were faculty speaking about the Mas Program, which gives the honors students who are enrolled in it special privileges and opportunities offered exclusively for them. For instance, the program receives access to Mas-only college tours, courses, and classes.
As the entrance exam date approaches for incoming freshman, the CCHS Open House allows for those interested to get a closer look at the school. Columbus hopes to attract and excite new explorers, and keep the brotherhood alive and well as they continue through 60 years as a family that just keeps growing.
