Miami-Dade Technobus helps people learn in the digital age
Digital technology is being incorporated into books and curriculum more and more as time goes on. This can be a problem for people with lower income. But Miami-Dade libraries has thought of an interesting solution.
The technobus is a bus created by Miami-Dade public libraries, which travels around the county and hosts a wide variety of digital technology available to the public, students in particular. From Mac’s, to keyboards, to drones, people can use this technology to do anything from homework, to learning something completely new.
“I saw that on the Technobus that we could learn coding, and i thought that was super cool since I’ve always been I’ve always been interested in coding,” said Makayla Roberts, a student in Miami-Dade county.
And learning about modern technology could be extremely beneficial to these kids in the future. The world is becoming more and more digital. So one of the main goals of the technobus is to educate kids on technology so it could benefit them not only in school, but eventually in the job market.
“If you are not able to have access to technology in this age, in the 21st century, you’re going to be left behind,” said Marlon T Moore, manager of the Technobus.
And having an advantage in the future job market might be crucial for most of the kids using the technobus. The technobus primarily travels to lower income areas, so a lot of the kids have a disadvantage with education and learning technology. Many of the schools these kids go to don’t even have a computer which can run iready, a part of the school curriculum which is graded. If it weren’t for the Technobus’ occasional visits, many of these kids might fail. Being able to do their work has made many in the community.
“They’re so excited when he (Marlon Moore) is here because the kids are able to do their iready, and they appreciate it so much, they just love getting on the bus and getting their iready done.” Said Dalia Love, a Miami-Dade teacher.
And this excitement for the Technobus, and an excitement to be immersed in the world of technology has clearly spread throughout the community. Kids are able to learn about technology and get a head start in the digital age. Whether it’s editing videos or flying drones, kids are being able to do these advanced and usually expensive things. And the Technobus will continue to go around Miami-Dade county, hoping to make a positive impact in many people’s lives.
