Explorers take on the Cavaliers in huge district match up
The crowd at Br. Kevin court could not get any louder on Thursday night when the Columbus Explorers faced off against district rival Coral Gables Cavaliers.
This was the second meeting for the two schools during the the season, and the Explorers going into the match up 0-1 were hungry to get the “W” on their home court.
After losing earlier in the season, the Explorers had their energy revved up to 11 in order to get a shot at redemption against a big Gables team. It was a hard fought and high intensity game for the Explorers for the first three quarters, however the Cavaliers pulled away with 58-46 victory.
Travis Williams, Gables Assistant Coach, had some encouraging words for the Explorers after a tough loss saying “[Columbus] played extremely well and they’re going to be around for awhile and this won’t be the last time we play them.”
Although the Explorers were playing well, their main path to victory proved to be shutting down Coral Gables big man, William Blet, Senior, who ended the night with 23 points on the board.
Williams commented on Blet’s performance saying “he did extremely well and tonight they all did a fabulous job.” With a very vibrant home crowd for the Explorers, the team played even with more tenacity however the determined Cavaliers would answer right back.
With a tough loss like this, the Explorers do not hang their heads, but rally back as a group and trust in one another. Gabriel Figueredo, Columbus Guard, talked about the importance of trusting your team after a tough district loss saying “I think with mentality comes confidence and having trust in our team.”
The Explorers that night had one thing in mind, and it was redemption.
However with the adrenaline of wanting to pull away with a home victory it caused the team to make some hard decisions. Figueredo explained that “we took some shots that were forced and we didn’t look for an extra pass or trust in our teammates to take an open shot.”
With 5 games left in season the Explorers need to rally back in order to get a shot at the State Tournament.
