Seminoles Weekly: Is Sean Maguire FSU’s quarterback of the future?

Sean Maguire came in against the NC State Wolfpack and led Florida State to victory last Saturday night.

After the loss to Clemson, the Florida State Seminoles head coach Jimbo Fisher benched Sean Maguire and started transfer quarterback Everett Golson. That was a mistake as Golson had a sub par performance.

Golson committed 3 turnovers in only the second quarter. “It was tough [finding out Thursday], especially after the two weeks, the emotion from last week. At the same time you got to be ready,” Maguire said.

This has been a roller coast ride for Maguire through the course of this season.

After losing the preseason competition to Golson, Maguire got limited action in two of the first seven games. When Golson suffered a concussion on the October 24 loss to Georgia Tech, Maguire started the following week against Syracuse and played amazing. Against the number 1 Clemson Tigers, it was different story as he threw a costly red zone interception.

Golson and Maguire spilt snaps this week but Fisher gave Golson the nod because he wanted a mobile quarterback.

Golson struggles continued Saturday. He committed 3 turnovers in the first 5 drives for FSU, including 2 interceptions, and was taken out with the Seminoles losing 17-7. He finished the game 5 for 9 for 52 yards and two interceptions.

Golson had not thrown a pick since last season at Notre Dame.

“We were in a bad rut and we thought he could give us a spark,” said Fisher about bringing in Maguire. “What he did and the maturity he showed, to able to be ready to go and do that was outstanding.

Next week FSU will play against the Chattanooga Mocs which should be an easy win for the Seminoles. The Mocs are 8-2 but they have not played any Top 25 teams and shouldn’t be able to put up any fight against the Florida State Seminoles.

With Sean Maguire starting on Saturday, FSU should have an easy win and will be able to start focusing on their next matchup next week— the Florda Gators.

Final Prediction: Florida State will have no problem with this team and will blow them out of the water. Running back Dalvin Cook will run for more that 250 yards and will get at least 3 touchdowns. Sean Maguire will do great and will end up having one touchdown as well. The FSU defense will shut out the Mocs offense and they will not score 1 point.

Final Score: 28 FSU Chattanooga 0
