Is Sean Maguire the quarterback for this team? As Everett Golson was struggling and out last week due to a concussion, Sean Maguire started against Syracuse. He made a strong case on why he should be starting over Everett Golson next week against the undefeated Clemson Tigers.
“That’s up to Coach Fischer,” the redshirt junior Sean Maguire said on whether he made his case to start this coming weekend against No. 3 Clemson.
Maguire became the first Seminoles quarterback to throw for 300 yards in the first half since 2000. The Seminoles offense looked very good under the control of Maguire. To go along with 348 passing yards Maguire also threw 3 touchdown passes. What makes it even more impressive is that he did that without star running back Dalvin Cook or two starters on the offensive line.
Syracuse is one of the worst teams defending the pass. It is ranked 98th nationally in 20-yard completions allowed, and Fischer showed confidence in Maguire by opening the playbook.
Maguire attempted a higher percentage of passes down field Saturday than Golson has this season. 37.1 percent of Maguire’s throws were 10-plus yards downfield, 25.7 were at least 17 yards and 17.1 traveled 20 or more yards. Golson percentages are 28.0, 19.3 and 10.1.
Coach Fischer said “the best player will play” when talking about the two quarterbacks, he still needs to see if Golson is healthy. Golson passed the concussion protocol, on Thursday Fischer said that he expected Golson to play, but Fischer told Maguire on Friday that he would start against the Orange.
It was a tough pill to swallow for Maguire when days before the season opener Fischer named Golson, who transferred to Florida State in May, the starter. Maguire was the No. 1 quarterback exiting spring practice, but after Golson won the job, Maguire had rarely seen the field. Maguire has always been the back up at Florida State, first behind Jameis Winston and now behind Everett Golson.
Fischer praised Maguire for always preparing like he was the starter despite being listed as a backup. Left guard Chad Mavety said Maguire is regularly among the last plays to leave the field after practice.
Coach Fischer has a huge decision to make as Clemson is no Syracuse. Clemson is one of the premier football teams in the nation at the moment. They are ranked number 3 for a reason, and they plan to try to stop whatever quarterback is under center.
Final Prediction: Everett Golson will end up getting the start to play against the Clemson Tigers. It will not make a difference as Clemson will shut down the FSU offense. The defense will start off well but ultimately will not be able to stop the Clemson high powered offense.
Final Score: Florida State 21 Clemson 35
