Gators Weekly: Hargreaves III leads Gators to first SEC win
Last Saturday, the Florida Gators played the Kentucky Wildcats in the first SEC game of the season for the Gators.
The Gators battled hard and barely pulled out a 14-9 win, giving coach Jim McElwain his first SEC victory. Cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III sat out last week due to a leg injury, and this week returned and propelled his team. He finished the game with an interception and a 57 yard return to set up Florida’s first touchdown, while also shutting down his side of the field. No doubt Hargreaves presence helped the Gators dominant defense, but this defensive line consisting of Jonathan Bullard, Alex, McCalister, Caleb Brantley, and CeCe Jefferson all combined for 6 sacks.
Quarterback Will Grier performed okay on Saturday, putting up 125 yards passing while running for an additional 61 yards on the ground plus a touchdown. Grier could have taken advantage of situations down the line of the game, but at the end of the day he got his team the victory and that’s what matters. This week, Florida takes on the Tennessee Vols where coach Jim McElwain is still unsure who will be starting under center for his team as QB Treon Harris and Grier will battle it out during practice. I think because of Grier’s performance last Saturday, that that will be enough to get him the start this Saturday. But don’t be surprised if coach Jim McElwain makes a similar announcement like this every week, as he will want to push his players as much as he can and competition will do that.
As the Gators extend the longest current streak in college football against Kentucky to make it 29 straight, they now look to the future to extend another streak against an SEC opponent— Tennessee. Florida has beaten them 10 times in a row, and in those games have forced 14 more turnovers then Tennessee has and have averaged 14 more points per game.
Prediction for Florida vs Tennessee: In a divisional matchup against a typical SEC opponent in the Vols, the Gators defense needs to step up like last game and the offense will need to put up at least 2 touchdowns for the Gators to win, and I think they will. Florida extends their streak against Tennessee to 11.
Predicted Score: Florida 17 Tennessee 14
