The FIU Golden Panthers came into last week’s game against the Indiana Hoosiers with their heads held high after a 15-14 win over UCF.
This past weekend; however, they were kicked off of their high horse, losing by a final score of 36-22.
The Golden Panthers played well early in the game, leading 14 to 13 at the half. The second half wasn’t as kind to FIU; however, and the Golden Panthers got outscored 23-8 in the second half. Starting quarterback Alex McGough threw for 249 yards and 3 touchdowns, but at the end of the day the aerial attack wasn’t enough.
FIU loves to pass the ball and it worked against UCF, but the fact is they must establish the running game. Last week when the Golden Panthers faced off against UCF, running back Alex Gardner rushed for 75 yards on 15 carries. In the Indiana game; however, he rushed for only 63 yards on 18 carries.
If FIU wants to pick up a victory against the N.C. Central Eagles this week, they will have to be more assertive on the ground and the offensive line will have to open holes up front.
When you look at the opponent, The N.C. Central Eagles are in about the same place mentally as FIU. Both teams won their first game and dropped their second game to a team in a power 5 conference. NC Central is coming of a 55 point loss to Duke and is looking to pick up a victory before beginning a long stretch of in conference games.
The Eagles have had two different quarterbacks in the past two games, Quinn Billerman and Malcolm Bell, and although Bell has performed better both quarterbacks have gotten playing time. The Eagles, if they go with Bell, are choosing a more run oriented scheme, while Alex McGough will be playing in a more traditional passing role for FIU.
Final Prediction: FIU gets back to what they do best and runs the ball for over 150 yards and pull away late.
Final Score: FIU 28 NC Central 14
