Columbus drama club competes in One-Act challenge
Columbus High School is known for many things; its sports program, broadcast program and of course it’s unique way to educate students, but one program that does not get much recognition is the drama program.
The club has accomplished a lot throughout the years, even going to their first state competition last year and taking home awards. This year the drama club took on a new challenge, a one act competition. The one act competition consisted of numerous High schools performing one act of a play, in less than 40 minutes. If a team cannot perform the act in less than 40 minutes, it is disqualified. The competition took place at Hialeah High School. This was the first year that the Columbus drama club performed its play, Deus Ex.
It was definitely a new experience for the drama club. The auditorium at Hialeah was much bigger than Columbus stage in the Lawrence Bell Center, and with more then 15 schools, and a few judges, in the audience, the pressure was on. “It was definitely something new and difficult. We aren’t used to doing this kind of thing; we are used to performing for the school, in our own home. This was a new territory and that was honestly intimidating but in the end we performed our best and came back with a superior, meaning we got the second best score, so for our first time in the competition, it wasn’t bad at all!” said Justin Rodriguez, a junior in the drama club.
The drama club has evolved throughout the years, especially for Gabriel Salgado, the active president of the drama club. “Since I was a freshman, the club has grown so much. We’ve put on plays we never thought we would put on, we went to our first state competition and took home many awards and now we went to our first one act competition and performed extremely well. Definitely a lot of things have changed since I was a freshman,” said Salgado.
With more then half the school year left, only time can tell where the drama club will head next. The play that they performed for the one act competition, Deus Ex, will be available for the school to see on November 17-21, and with their individual competitions on November 22 and December 6, the drama club has a lot to do to continue on its road to success.
